NES Emulation on the unmodded Xbox 360 through MCE
February 12, 2009by Chris
The only emulator available for the unmodded Xbox 360 is NESCAFE by Xexter in 2006. It has been tested with a few NES games and seems to work charmingly. Audio is not supported, and seeing that the emulator has been out for 3 years, it doesn't look like audio will be available any time soon.
Xexter was kind enough to map out the NES controls to the 360 controller (see below image). What a great guy.
It's probably best to play your fav NES games on your PC, Mac, or jailbroken iPhone (or touch), however, this is the way to go if you want to impress your friends by booting up 8bit Super Mario Bros on your magnificent triple core masterpiece.
The original NESCafe is a NES Java emulator written by David de Niese, which you can play in your browser right now at www.nescafeweb.com.
To get NESCAFE working on your Xbox 360, you'll need a Windows Media Center box with the Xbox 360 MCE extender.
setup
1. extract the rar into
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Media Center\Media Center Programs\
on your media center system in XP or
C:\Users\Mcx1\AppData\Roaming\Media Center Programs
for Vista (which has been untested so good luck with that)
2. edit nes.htm for different resolutions (currently, its native resolution is 480p)
3. edit nes.html where [name] = romname (in the xml tag)
4. enjoy with no sound
notes
- forum at xbox-scene; this is where the emulator was announced and remains as the only original source

There has been some talk about porting the Genesis NEC TurboGrafx-16 over to the 360 so we shall see what happens with that. Stay tuned!
