PCSX2 Playstation 2 emulator for Windows

January 20, 2009by Chris

imageThe emulator will function on Windows XP, Vista, and the current Windows 7 beta, however, a state-of-the-art machine is required to get a reasonable 30fps (ie dual or quad core system with 2GB of RAM minimum). I managed to get it running on my antiquated P4 running Windows 7 beta but could only obtain about 3FPS! Time to get a new system.

PCSX2 was initially started by the team of Shadow, Linuzapps, and Saquib and then new coders joined: auMatt, Florin, Goldfinger, Refraction, and Zerofrog, with a large testers group lead by Belmont, Bositman, CKemu, CHaosCode, Falcon4ever, GeneralPlot, Nachbrenner, Parotaku, Prafull, Raziel, and Rudy X.

The emulator was first released in 2002 and went through 5 years of solid development with the last major version released in November of 2007 (version 0.9.4). It functions in both Windows and Linux and exists in open source code under the GPL. Active subversions are available and some updates to the project have been announced.

PCSX2 requires a copyrighted BIOS from a Playstation 2 to operate. It can be found floating around on the Internet (SCPH10000, SCPH3004R, SCPH39001), usually on torrents, or may be dumped from your physical PS2 (the most legal method possible). how to dump BIOS from a PS2

Two installers are included in the emulator download, the virtual memory build is recommended as it is the fastest. It requires XP or XP Home both with SP2.

The emulator supports a variety of plug-ins, will play BIN and ISO files and is compatible with CD's and DVD's from your PC's DVD-ROM. Cheats and workarounds plus many other options are available. This is a very indepth emulator and huge props go out to its creators.

Joystick detection and mapping is very simple, the app supports a variety of controllers including the Dual Shock 2. It easily mapped to my dual analogue Logitech Rumblepad 2 (a beautiful dual shock 2 knockoff, how can Logitech not get sued for this?)

You can take screenshots with the emulator and even make videos with it.

Game compatibility is medium-low with only a few titles that offer near-perfect emulation. Hopefully this will improve over the years as technology improves. A compatibility list is available at wwww.pcsx2.net.
