PS3 Backwards Compatibility
January 19, 2009by Chris
If you acquired one of the original Playstation 3 systems then you can play Playstation 2 games on your PS3 through hardware emulation.
The PS2 emotion engine chip was included in the original NTSC 20GB and 60GB systems. Unfortunately, these systems are no longer in production.
To increase profit margins, Sony removed the chip from all subsequent versions of the PS3 and provided P2 software emulation for the NTSC 60 & 80 GB versions and the PAL 60GB version.
Current production models do not support hardware or software emulation. You cannot play Playstation 2 games on the current 160GB or 80GB models.
PS2 hardware emulation was sketchy but not bad with upwards of 90% of the titles tested working but the success rate is much lower for software emulation.
For the models that support emulation, a compatibility database has been created at Sony's website.
The official word from Sony about backwards compatibility. All PS3 models can play PS1 games.
At this moment in time, your best bet for playing PS2 games is to use the original PS2 hardware. Perhaps in a few years' time we will be able to faithfully emulate the PS2 to a near-perfect degree of accuracy, like we can with today's technology when emulating the Sega Genesis or original Nintendo, for example.
