How to Jailbreak 2.2 (iPhone and iPod touch 1G)
January 5, 2009by Chris
Software Update 2.2 is the most current release from Apple at this time (January 2009). Here are the instructions on how to safely jailbreak your iPhone or touch and restore to factory settings. Jailbreak apps are free, don't be fooled into paying for one.
The second generation iPod touch has an updated processor and cannot be fully jailbroken at this time. Dev-Team is currently working on a jailbreak for the touch 2G and have, what it looks like, a working alpha version at the moment, but no public release.
Windows
1. install itunes version 8
- if you have a iPod touch 1G then use iTunes to update to software version 2.2 (not free)
- to find out current version: tap Settings/General/About
2. download QuickPwn22.zip
3. acquire the IPSW file (ipod/iphone software)
- iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G
- for iPod touch, browse to:
C:Documents and Settings[user name]Application DataApple ComputeriTunesiPod Software Updates
- [user name] is your account name
- make sure Hidden Folders are viewable (Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options../View/Show hidden files and folders)
- copy the .ipsw file to the desktop for easy retrieval with QuickPwn
4. launch QuickPwn
5. connect your iphone or touch to your system with the USB cable
6. follow the prompts from QuickPwn
It takes about 10 minutes. You have options to change the boot graphic plus include Installer.app and Cydia. (ensure that you include Installer.app)
Mac
1. download PwnageTool_2.2.dmg
2. launch Pwnage Tool and follow prompts.
notes
- Jailbreaking your device will/will not void the warranty as you may restore your device to factory settings at any time.
- It is recommended that you back-up your software before jailbreaking. Back-up and restore instructions are found here.
- Any software you have purchased, all music, and all files will be wiped out when you restore (always have a current back-up to restore from).
