The Return of Home Video Games
October 31, 2008by Chris
WIDELY ACCREDITED with the resurgence of home video games in the 80's, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) introduced a paradigm shift in gaming: quality games that were fun to play.
Plumbers Mario and Luigi escaped the arcade and found a place in our homes in their first NES title, Super Mario Bros. A game that guys and gals could enjoy together. Direct concepts, graphics, and audio from the original Mario games appear in today's versions - the games were (and still are) just that good.
The NES arrived with a brand new type of input controller - the rectangular thumbpad. Although it form-factored into your hands like a sideways chalkboard eraser, it was several steps forward and opened the doors to new ideas that ultimately provided us with the refined game controllers that we have today. One could finally control the games without battling an awkward controller.
Matell almost got the controller right with the Intellivision. Nintendo refined the hell out of the idea and still uses much the same idea in the DS.
Nintendo has always been a curious company in the industry; never afraid to take chances and try something new. From big time failures with the Rob Robot to massive wins with the Wii, you can always rely on Nintendo to provide you with fun. Isn't that what it's all about?
